Why Jordan Peterson is Dangerous (Really) to Christianity
I am writing this because I see how popular Dr. Peterson has gotten in the last few years. I think he is a danger to Christianity. This will not be a very long article. I just want to get the idea out there.
Now, some Christians are very mistaken about Dr. Peterson. They think he is friendly to Christianity even if they do not think he is a Christian himself. This is a categorical error to make and I will tell you why.
What is Dr. Peterson's message regarding Christianity? It is to bear your cross and do what needs to be done. Now, you might think there is nothing actually wrong with that. But that is his definition of Christianity. It is not that plus the other more important bits that we all as Christians take for granted. Rather, that is how he is smuggling his Nietzschian ideas into the culture. He knows if he started being a Nietzschian apologist people would reject his message because people today are mostly "spiritual but not religious," rather than adhering to religion or atheism. Now, you might ask me, "Surely not." But consider this: When was the last time you saw Dr. Peterson talk about the idea of grace? Has he ever? Has grace in the Christian faith ever been something he has even addressed? I have watched Dr. Peterson talk about Christianity dozens if not hundreds of times. I have never in my life ever seen him talk about the concept that Christ offers us grace by dying on the cross for us. Why? Because Dr. Peterson is just using Christianity in his pragmatic worldview. He is using it to climb the social ladder. We know this because that is what his advice is to other people. He tells people all the time to work hard and climb the social hierarchy ladder. That is not Christianity. That is a works-based religion. No, it is not that either. It is actually taking the idea that Nietzsche worked with. It is trying to become an übermensch. That is Dr. Peterson's message. It is not a message of grace and the redemption we have in Christ. It is not affirming the resurrection of Christ, which I have never seen him affirm. The best I have seen from him regarding that is being agnostic. But that does not get you into heaven. That sends you to hell. Adrian Rogers has this remarkable quote. He says, "To be almost saved is to be totally lost." And so, Dr. Peterson is leading people to hell. A Christianity that is devoid of grace is no kind of Christianity at all. That is why Jordan Peterson is dangerous to Christianity.
Ephesians 2:8-9 "For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast."
God bless you!
Until next time!
